Two weeks after Recording Day

“Welcome back to the White Room.” I gesture to the high chair in the middle of the room, but Tony knows the drill.

He climbs on, settling without much discomfort. “This is the last session, right?”

“Yes. Thank you for coming back.”

“No problem.”

He’s the first no-longer-stranger of the day, so I pay extra attention to focus the camera. I make sure to centre him in the middle of the screen and there’s some lucky sunlight that’s coming into the room through the small windows.

“Okay, we’re all set to go,” I say. “Can you remind everyone who you are and how the previous crush confession went?”

The guy nods. “Hi, I’m Tony. I’ve had a crush on my best friend for over a year. I told Caspian about my feelings on the phone, but he didn’t… He didn’t reciprocate.”

“And how do you feel about that?”

“A little heartbroken,” he admits softly. “A lot heartbroken, actually.”

“Did you two have a talk?”

“We did.” He nods, his head bopping multiple times before he grows still again. “He was really kind about it, just like I thought he would. He apologised a lot.”

“Are you two still friends?”

“Of course. It’ll be a little awkward in the beginning, but we’ll be fine. We’re bros.” Tony is wearing the same jeans, but the whole at his knee is a lot bigger. He picks at some of the threads, unravelling it even more. “Yeah…”

“Do you regret telling him?” I ask, my breath caged. I never meant to ruin anyone’s life and I really hope I haven’t.

Tony ponders for a moment before he answers. “No, I don’t regret it. I’m sad that he doesn’t feel the same. A part of me really thought he would. Or maybe I hoped he would. I mean, that would’ve been the best outcome, right?”

I’m not sure if he wants me to actually answer, so I stay silent so he can continue.

“I’m glad I cleared the air though. I’ve been crushing on him for so long, it was starting to affect our friendship. That’s one of the things we talked about. I was so occupied with deciphering hints and trying to figure out if he felt the same or not, I wasn’t able to really enjoy the time we spent together. I was always on the hunt for more. Now I’m not. I can finally rest and enjoy our friendship.”

“You sound very positive about it,” I remark.

“I guess I am.”

“What about your feelings? Do you still have them? Are they gone now?”

Tony frowns. “Hmmm, good question. I guess I still have some feelings. Like, they’re not just going to go away, especially because there’s also a lot of love. I love him and he loves me.
